They say time flies when you are having fun but what about time just plain flies, period. As I have mentioned many times, I have two boys and this year my oldest son is graduating and will become a legal adult (an adult at 18 is debatable in my opinion but I don’t make the law). Anyway, people used to tell me to enjoy the time I spend with my boys because their childhood goes by fast. The thing is most people don’t really get that until the time has gone by! It is just harder to see when you are in the moments and it can be the same in business. Without slowing down and really paying attention to the time, time management and reflecting, the time can fly and some times it can take achievement with it! So what am I saying? I am saying that it is very important to take an inventory of your daily time use as a business owner to include the things that are time zappers, like scrolling social media, staying on the phone too long with someone, procrastinating, etc! I wrote a previous article about Trello and I how I am using it to help me organize my time and goals. In addition to using some type of platform, strategic planning can really help with time management. If you have a plan to accomplish certain goals each month and you log your time everyday, you can then note if your time use is helping you get closer to those goals or further away. Is the business moving in the right direction at the right speed? Moving too fast perhaps because you spend your time taking on everything that is thrown your way (hey I am working on it!!), moving too slow because you are taking too much time to make a decision, moving in the wrong direction because you are not taking time to get wise counsel, meeting with advisors, consultants and coaches. I don’t know about you but I am doing my best this year to be more focused with my time so that when I leave the office, I feel accomplished and still have time for my mom and wife roles and some R&R. And if the time management with your roles outside of the business are out of balance, you can be proactive in those areas too! I personally plan leisure because I know me! Do you know you? What about do you know were your time is going? If not, don’t you think it is about time to do something about it!
