What should you do if your company is getting audited?
Well if you are like my old self, you panic. Your heart races and you start thinking of all of the horrible things that can happen as a result of the audit. Been there! I have made progress but audits still make me a little nervous.
Here is my “4 C” advise on things you can do to help you feel less anxious during an audit:
Do exactly what the auditors are asking you to do quickly. If they are asking for notes, it is your responsibility to send the notes in during the time frame specified. Allowing time to linger or waiting past the deadline will not help you sleep at night. If they ask to come into your office and take a look around, be polite and let them do what they need to do. Auditors showed up to my office one year unexpectedly and looked through our file cabinet and took pictures! We were friendly with everyone, answered the questions to the best of our ability and complied. We are still living!
Consult your legal and business advisors. Fortunately, my consultants have been through audits themselves and provided encouragement and the “It will be alright” sermons that I needed at the time. It also really feels good to have a relationship with an experienced attorney who will stand by your side if needed even if he/she is $350 plus an hour!
Concentrate on Quality Assurance
You should have a quality assurance program in place but if you do not, now is a good time to look at creating one and improving weak company areas. You can do your own weekly audits. An audit can open your eyes to things that need improvement so it is not always a bad thing! You can use it to help make your company better!
